Ecommerce Product Image Playbook
Updated: 10 March 2026
Written by the ImageReady editorial team. Reviewed against common ecommerce catalog and PDP workflows.
Consistent product imagery improves conversion trust. Faster product pages improve discovery and reduce drop-off. This guide focuses on shipping both.
1) Define image tiers
- Primary gallery images: highest quality and detail.
- Category tiles: medium quality for grid speed.
- Thumbnails: smallest dimensions and lighter compression.
- Marketplace exports: channel-specific dimensions and filename format.
2) Standardize dimensions
- Keep a single base aspect ratio for catalog consistency.
- Use fixed dimensions for feeds where possible.
- Avoid mixing portrait and landscape in the same product grid.
- Save source originals before marketplace-specific crops.
3) Tune quality by funnel stage
- PDP images: 85-90% for texture and detail trust.
- Category images: 80-85% for balanced speed and quality.
- Thumbnails: 70-80% for lightweight browsing.
- Always inspect skin, fabric weave, metallic surfaces, and labels.
4) Build a repeatable QA gate
- Check mobile and desktop rendering for at least three product types.
- Verify no stretched aspect ratios or clipped details.
- Track LCP and page weight after each major catalog update.
- Keep before/after samples for internal quality signoff.
